A photograph of Rhiya Ahir standing in front of a police van in Mumbai became one of the defining images of India’s youth protests. But who is she, and why did she take that stand?

In this BBC News India interview, Rhiya recounts what happened at a solidarity protest in Mumbai, where demonstrators gathered in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a youth-led movement that began online and has since spread across India.

The protests began over allegations of paper leaks and irregularities in competitive examinations. Many protesters are demanding greater accountability from the government, including the resignation of India’s education minister. The government says it has introduced reforms to strengthen the examination system and has appealed for protests to remain peaceful.
