On June 1, 1984, Operation Blue Star began in India. The operation was approved by the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The Indian army stormed the Golden Temple in the Indian state of Punjab to drive out a Sikh extremist religious leader and his followers from the temple premises, fighting for the formation of a separate state of Khalistan.
