TheCellular Jail, also known asKālā Pānī(lit. ’Black Water’), was a British colonial prison in theAndaman and Nicobar Islands. The prison was used by thecolonial government of Indiafor the purpose ofexilingcriminals andpolitical prisoners. Many notableindependence activists, includingDiwan Singh Kalepani,Yogendra Shukla,Batukeshwar Dutt, Shadan Chandra Chatterjee,Sohan Singh,Vinayak Savarkar,Hare Krishna Konar,Shiv Verma, andSudhanshu Dasguptawere imprisoned here during thestruggle for India’s independence.Today, the complex serves as a national memorial monument.
