Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was captured and is now in U.S. custody after a dramatic military operation.

The United States carried out a large military strike inside Venezuela that targeted key locations, including Caracas. During this operation, U.S. forces captured Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and flown them out of Venezuela to the United States. They have been brought to New York, where they are expected to face federal charges.

After the capture, U.S. leaders said the United States might temporarily oversee governance or influence the political direction in Venezuela. In Venezuela itself, the vice president has been declared acting president by the country’s high court, but there is confusion and disagreement over who is truly in charge.
