Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a real-time payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) that facilitates inter-bank transactions. It allows users to transfer money from one bank account to another instantly and securely, without the need for the recipient’s bank details like account number or IFSC code.
With UPI, users can make payments using their mobile phones, without the need for cash, credit/debit cards or net banking. UPI transactions can be initiated and completed using mobile apps provided by banks or third-party payment service providers.
UPI has become a popular mode of payment in India since its launch in 2016 and is now widely used for a variety of transactions, including peer-to-peer payments, bill payments, mobile recharges, and online shopping. The success of UPI has helped promote digital payments and financial inclusion in the country.
