On June 6, 1984, Operation Blue was carried out by the Indian army to drive out Khalistani leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale​ and his followers who had taken shelter in the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab.

The operation was ordered by India’s then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Months after the operation, Indira Gandhi was assassinated and anti-Sikh riots broke out across India.
