Day 7 of Built Desi – a series on the materials India built itself with, and why we stopped using them.
Today: Kota stone, a natural limestone from Kota, Rajasthan. It stays cool in summer, handles decades of heavy footfall, and costs a fraction of imported marble or vitrified tiles – an investment of roughly ₹30–60/sq ft depending on finish. Yet most new Indian homes have stopped using it.
In this video: where it works best (verandahs, courtyards, kitchens, high-traffic zones) and the one mistake people make while polishing it.
Catch up on the series: Day 1 Rammed Earth, Day 2 Bamboo, Day 3 Terracotta, Day 4 Limestone, Day 6 Perforated Jaali.
