Russian cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station recently displayed the Indian national flag and sent Independence Day greetings to India. The video was released ahead of India’s 80th Independence Day on 15 August 2026.
The three cosmonauts were Pyotr Dubrov, Anna Kikina and Andrey Fedyaev. They recorded the message while orbiting approximately 400 kilometres above Earth. Holding the Tricolour inside the space station, they wished Indians peace, prosperity and success.
The video became popular in India because it combined an Independence Day message with a striking view from space. However, descriptions saying Russia “showed the Indian flag over Earth” can be slightly misleading. The cosmonauts held a physical flag inside the ISS; they did not project a giant Indian flag onto Earth or unfurl it outside the station.
Their message also highlighted the long history of India–Russia cooperation in space. The Soviet Union launched India’s first satellite, Aryabhata, in 1975. In 1984, Rakesh Sharma became the first Indian in space aboard the Soviet Soyuz T-11 mission.
More recently, Indian astronaut candidates for the Gaganyaan human-spaceflight programme received training at Russia’s Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre. Russia has therefore remained an important partner while India develops its ability to send astronauts into orbit independently.
The cosmonauts also remembered Yuri Gagarin, the first human to travel into space, and his 1961 visit to India. Their message concluded with the words, “Long live India–Russia friendship.”
In simple terms, the viral video was a symbolic Independence Day greeting and an example of space diplomacy. It celebrated the Indian flag while reminding viewers that cooperation between India and Russia in space stretches back more than five decades.
