Delhi: Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra says, “We are all asking for a discussion. There are problems and major issues with the education policy. Yet, you are unwilling to discuss it; instead, you are using tear gas on the students and beating them up. For what? They are our children.”
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra strongly criticised the Central Government over the handling of students protesting against alleged examination irregularities and problems in India’s education system. Speaking during the Monsoon Session of Parliament in New Delhi, she demanded a detailed parliamentary discussion on education policy and the concerns being raised by students and young examination aspirants.
Priyanka Gandhi said Opposition parties were repeatedly asking the government to allow a discussion on the major challenges affecting the education sector. She alleged that instead of listening to students and addressing their grievances, security forces used tear gas and batons against those participating in the CJP protest near Parliament.
“There are problems and major issues with the education policy. Yet, you are unwilling to discuss it; instead, you are using tear gas on the students and beating them up. For what? They are our children,” Priyanka Gandhi said while questioning the government’s response to the demonstration.
Her statement came after thousands of supporters of the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party gathered at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and attempted to march towards Parliament. The protesters were demanding accountability over repeated examination paper leaks, alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and wider failures affecting students.
The situation became tense when sections of the crowd attempted to cross security barricades. The Associated Press reported the use of batons and tear gas during the confrontation. Reuters also reported allegations of police force and tear gas use, while noting that authorities disputed those claims.
Priyanka Gandhi maintained that students protesting over education and examination-related issues should be treated with sensitivity rather than subjected to force. She said the demonstrators were the country’s children and deserved to be heard by the government.
Opposition parties are pressing for a debate in Parliament on alleged paper leaks, examination reforms, student welfare and accountability within the education system. These subjects have emerged as major points of confrontation between the government and Opposition during the Monsoon Session.
The Congress MP’s “They are our children” remark has drawn attention to the police action at Jantar Mantar and intensified the political debate surrounding the CJP-led student movement. Her comments also raised questions about the government’s willingness to discuss education policy and respond to protesters through dialogue.
