Protests, Cheers and Politics: PM Modi’s Australia Visit Draws Mixed Reactions in Melbourne
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Australia has generated sharply contrasting scenes, with thousands of members of the Indian community gathering in Melbourne to welcome him while several protest groups demonstrated outside the venue. Around 25,000 to 30,000 people attended the “Melbourne Meets Modi” event at Marvel Stadium, where Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese spoke about strengthening ties in trade, defence, energy and the Indo-Pacific partnership.
Outside the stadium, however, multiple groups held demonstrations against Modi’s visit. The protesters included human rights activists, sections of Australia’s Sikh and Muslim communities, and a small far-right anti-immigration group. Some protesters raised concerns about human rights and religious freedom in India, while the far-right demonstrators opposed immigration and carried anti-Indian slogans. Australian police maintained a significant security presence to keep the opposing groups separated, and no major disruptions were reported during the event.
One incident that received particular attention involved a far-right activist who allegedly breached security near the hotel where Prime Minister Modi was staying before later reappearing outside the Melbourne event. Authorities removed the individual, and the programme continued as scheduled. Despite the protests, the stadium witnessed loud chants in support of Modi, with members of the Indian diaspora celebrating his return to Australia after several years.
The visit also produced important diplomatic outcomes, including a renewed uranium export agreement and expanded cooperation in critical minerals, renewable energy and defence.
