Mark Carney’s speech at the Davos 2026 forum is being lauded by many as among the best speeches a world leader has given in a long time. The reason? His brutal honesty.

Carney, in the speech that he reportedly wrote himself from scratch, essentially laid out a doctrine for a world of fractured international norms, warning “compliance will not buy safety”.

“The old order is not coming back. We should not mourn it,” he said. “Nostalgia is not a strategy.”

Importantly, he also basically admitted that the concept of a “rules-based order” every leader has been speaking about ever since international order has been a thing, was basically false.

The remarks, delivered to politicians, media and business leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, were received with a standing ovation.
