WHAT IS YOUR FAV PLACE IN WEST BENGAL?
– In 1947, India gained independence from British rule, and British India was divided into India and Pakistan.
– East Bengal, which had a Muslim majority, became a part of Pakistan, while West Bengal, which had a Hindu majority, became a part of India.
– The Bengali language, which had been banned by the British during colonial rule, became the official language of East Pakistan (later Bangladesh) and West Bengal.
– In 1971, East Pakistan declared independence from Pakistan and became the country of Bangladesh after a nine-month-long war with Pakistan.
– This war was one of the deadliest conflicts of the 20th century, with estimates of the death toll ranging from 300,000 to 3 million people.
– Despite the political division between West Bengal and Bangladesh, the two regions share many cultural and linguistic ties, and there is a vibrant exchange of ideas, music, and art between the two.
