Tibetan activist dies after setting himself on fire outside UN headquarters

A Tibetan activist has died in hospital after setting himself on fire outside the United Nations headquarters in New York. Loga Rangzen carried out the self-immolation after broadcasting a live video online, in which he called for Tibetan independence and urged the community to remain united.He was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan with severe burns following the incident on Thursday evening.
Following news of his death, crowds of Tibetan demonstrators gathered near the UN headquarters to hold a vigil and protest against Beijing’s policies.Holding Tibetan flags and placards, the demonstrators called for “justice for Loga Rangzen” and condemned what they described as China’s brutal repressive measures inside Tibet.Activists at the scene called on the UN to take immediate action to investigate human rights abuses in the region. According to advocacy groups, more than 157 Tibetans have turned to self-immolation since 2009 to protest against Chinese rule.
