ਚੁੱਕੀ ਹਰਫ਼ਾਂ ਨੇ ਨਜ਼ਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਕੀ ;
ਇਸ਼ਕੇ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ‘ਚੋਂ ,
ਪਾਣੀ ਵਾਰਿਆ, ਸੁਣੀਂ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ,
ਨੈਣਾਂ ਨੇ ਰਾਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਰਜ਼ਾ ਉਤਾਰਿਆ ।
How shall I tell the tale of my heart ?

My eyes repaid their debt to the waiting roads by beholding you.
ਜਦੋਂ ਛਿੜਿਆ ਮੁਹੱਬਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਗੀਤ ਜੀ !
ਵਰ੍ਹੀ ਬੱਦਲਾਂ ਚੋਂ ਰੱਜ-ਰੱਜ ਪੀ੍ਤ ਜੀ ;
ਧੁੱਪ ਗੋਰੀ ਭਿੱਜ ਗਈ ,
ਰਹੀ ਸੰਗਦੀ, ਓਹਲ੍ਹੇ ਮੰਗਦੀ,
ਚੁੰਨੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਅੰਬਰਾਂ ਗੁਲਾਬੀ ਰੰਗ ਦੀ।
When the song of love began to play,
The love rained from the clouds of reminiscence;
Fair sunlight itself was drenched,
Growing shy and seeking a veil to hide behind;
The heavens gifted her a rose-tinted scarf !
ਅਸੀ ਸੱਦਿਆ ਨੀ ਯਾਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਰੀਕ ਨੂੰ !
ਤਾਂ ਵੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਗਿਆ ਲਾਜ਼ਮੀ ਤਰੀਕ ਨੂੰ ;
ਚੇਤੇ ਆਏ ਨਾਲ ਜੀ !
ਗੱਲਾਂ ਖੋਲ੍ਹੀਆਂ ਆਂ, ਸ਼ਰਾਬਾਂ ਡੋਲ੍ਹੀਆਂ,
ਚੰਦਰੇ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਤੇਰੇ ਪਾਉਣ ਬੋਲੀਆਂ ।
I never summoned the companion of memories,
Yet he arrived unfailingly, right on time.
Remembrances came along with him;
Conversations unfolded, goblets overflowed,
& restless thoughts began singing about you !!
ਅੱਜ ਸੱਧਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੁੱਖੜਾ ਛੁਪਾ ਲਿਆ !
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਵਿਹੜੇ ‘ਚ ਬਹਿ ਕੇ ਗਾ ਲਿਆ ;
ਗਾਣਾ ਸਰਤਾਜ ਦਾ !
ਕੰਧ ਕੱਚ ਦੀ, ਕਿੰਝ ਬਚਦੀ,
ਰੀਝ ਬਾਹੋਂ ਫੜ ਅੱਗੇ ਹੋ-ਹੋ ਨੱਚਦੀ ।
Today, my longings hid their faces,
Sitting in the backyard & indulged in singing of a Sartaaj’s song .
How could a wall of glass remain unbroken ?
Desire seized me by the arm
& danced ahead in ecstasy .
ਸਾਡੀ ਅੱਲ੍ੜਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਵੇ ਕੁਆਰਿਆ !
ਬਹੁਤਾ ਲਿਸ਼ਕੀਂ ਨਾ ਅੰਬਰਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਤਾਰਿਆ ; ਗੱਲ ਬੜੇ ਰਾਜ਼ ਦੀ !
