Over 250 people from Manipur have landed at Ben Gurion Airport in Israel, the first group to arrive after the Israeli government approved their relocation in November last year.
They are the Bnei Menashe, the ‘Sons of Manasseh’, who believe they are one of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel, exiled by the Assyrian Empire in 720 BCE.
This mass relocation is the result of a 5‑year plan approved by the Israeli Cabinet in late 2025, which aims to bring over 5,000 Bnei Menashe to Israel about 1,200 per year. The operation, coordinated by the Israeli government and the NGO Shavei Israel, involves formal Jewish conversion by the Rabbinate and support like housing, flights, and Hebrew language training.
For many, this move is also a rescue from violence in Manipur. Since 2023, brutal Meitei–Kuki clashes have destroyed homes and forced families into relief camps. At the same time, Israel, facing war tensions with Iran and a labour shortage, is welcoming workers who can fill roles in agriculture and other sectors especially as many migrant workers from Thailand and Nepal have left since 2023.
