An encounter between high school students and Nathan Phillips, an Omaha tribal Elder, in Washington, DC, has generated a social media firestorm.
In a video shared online, teenager Nick Sandmann, wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat, smiles at Phillips, appearing to mock him.
In a recent interview, Sandmann refused to apologise, saying he “had every right” to stand there.
US President Donald Trump weighed in on the incident, accusing the media of treating Sandmann, but not Phillips, unfairly.
Al Jazeera’s Kimberly Halkett reports.
